Many Cities charge sewer treatment fees based on the amount of water usage people consume in their homes. It is all monitored through a main city meter. Because the water usage ultimately goes down the drains and into the city sewer system which must be treated and processed – there is a fee associated with it.

In Michigan during the summer months when we tend to use a lot of water outside, ie – irrigation systems, pool filling, etc. and that water does not go down the drains, many cities offer homeowners the option to install a “2nd Meter” for outside use that monitors and charges for the water but does not charge for sewer treatment fees. Ultimately, in the long run, installing a 2nd Meter can save a homeowner a tremendous amount of money over the course of many years.
